Violence against women in its various manifestations constitutes a global problem that affects all countries and cultures. Population surveys, empirical studies and data from the police, judicial and health fields confirm that in Spain it also reaches alarming dimensions (e.g., Consejo General del Poder Judicial, 2021; European Union – Agency for Fundamental Rights, EU-FRA, 2014; Violence against Women Macrosurvey, 2019). In recent years, the study of the psychosocial aspects of violence against women has provided important keys to better understanding and addressing it. The project we present is framed within this psychosocial approach and is a direct continuation of five previous ones: “Sexism and violence against women: social perception and new forms of expression” (PID2019-104239GB-I00), “Predictive factors of different forms of violence against women” (B-SEJ-135-UGR18), “Violence against women: myths, attitudes and influence of messages and uses of language on their social perception” (PSI2016-79812-P), “Psychosocial analysis of violence against women: attitudes, myths, normalizing social contexts and tendencies toward aggression” (PSI2013-45041-P), and “Social perception of sexual assaults” (PSI2010-15139). Likewise, it represents continuity with previous research projects of our group, in which we have studied different psychosocial variables related to gender inequalities: ambivalent sexism (BSO2001-3158), power differences (SEJ2004-02817) and gender discrimination ( SEJ2007-65816; SEJ2010-6225). The results obtained in all these projects, especially in the five most recent ones, have allowed us to know the implication of different ideological and situational factors in the perpetration and social perception of different violence against women, highlighting the role of sexist attitudes and myths. . Without a doubt, although the findings have been important, there are many new research questions and ideas that have emerged, some of which we present in this project, which is articulated around three lines of research. Specifically, we aim to: (1) advance the study of the manifestations of sexism and forms of violence against women in the context of new forms of online communication (online video games, sexual cyber violence and consumption of online pornography), (2) unravel the role of some intergroup and individual mechanisms involved in intimate partner violence against women, and (3) analyze how certain social messages that include women (compliments and feminist humor) affect different psychosocial variables related to sexism and the violence.
